Famara to Yaiza

Air BnB was tricky to find but got there eventually. It was compact but well equipped however very pricy at 180£ for the night and came with a very particular odour. Might just have been damp after all the rain but I suspect a blocked sewer somewhere.

Famara is a surf resort. Really beautiful.

Lovely meal out last night at the restaurant del Sol. On the beach front. Garlic prawns and wreck fish. Delicious. Then a tarte de queso, and a few scoops of vino also , well I am on holidays

Forecast for early part of today is poor and it’s drizzling as I write this before heading to breakfast at the surfers bar 🙄

Great breakfast 10/10

I didn’t eat the flower

West out of famara the road just stops replaced by first dirt road then sandy single track. Amazing

The gravel continued unabated all the way to club La Santa the spiritual home of the Mcconvey-Duffys. We did not like them book in for 5 back to back fitness sessions but headed to a cafe in La Santa for some two stroke ( Coke) and tarta Manzana.

Two stroke ( cyclists petrol)

The gravel then started to get very gnarly and volcanic , the wind blew on the nose. It was tough. I would liken it to trying to sail out of carlingford lough with a force 4 on the nose against a flooding spring tide. Paddy Harty will understand.

Apparently Lanzarote grows most of the world’s tarmac in fields like this. Who knew?

We diverted slightly hoping for a swim , it was a 2.5 km diversion down hill so there was some discussion. As it turned out it was way too wild to even consider dipping toes.

Onwards into the wind , it was hard to get any momentum and the surface was either loose lava or like a washboard. Legs got tired….

Thankfully bumped out onto the LZ73 ,up a steep climb however and then dropped down into Yaiza. Nice hotel. Cut today’s route a bit short but can finish the loop tomorrow. Very heavy wind forecast so might stick around here for a night. Rain never came and sun shone so despite the wind a great day and 90% off road.

Yaiza

I have had a request to refresh the ASSS score meaning which I coined during the wild Atlantic way trip. Here you go

“Derivation of the ASSSS.
(Assessment of saddle sore state score), Which is polite for how is your behind holding up?

I would suggest a scale similar to the Bristol stool scale for easy reference
0=normal skin appearance, feels like sitting on a sofa.
1=normal skin appearance , feels like sitting on a church pew.
2=mild redness of skin at contact points , feels like sitting on 180 grade sandpaper but bearable .
3= intense redness , feels like sitting on 60 grade sandpaper, need to stand occasionally.

4=Blister formation, feels like sitting on broken glass

5=Ulcer formation, get off the bike and walk!!

Today’s score a worrying 2/5

🚦 mostly green.
