You are a pack horse not a race horse. Miles are hard earned and frequently dirty/ mucky. if it’s a holiday you are on don’t over plan too much distance. I would say 75km is plenty.

Accommodation: if you book more than one night ahead you end up forcing a route that is hard to alter with conditions. We mostly booked on the day. In the canaries we got accommodation ranging from 88 euro a night from booking.com to 200 euro a night for a swish hotel. The booking.com apartments were all good. Most had a washing machine ( important)

Weather , miles are hard won on gravel in wind and rain. In the canaries the ground turns to sludge in the wet. It’s impassable and impossible to clean the bike. We were lucky to get a hose on two occasions.

Porridge.

4.Gear :the heavier your bike is the harder it is and the more windage you will have. I carried the most as I handled spares etc.

Tailfin : don’t bother getting anything else it’s super gear.

I had the mini panniers on the back One had a spare tyre ( we were running 650bx45 and I doubt we could have replaced. ) a set of brake pads each , (from past experience) . Spare hangers , chain links, dyna plugs, sealant x2 , 4 tubes and a repair kit all super light (TPC)The other pannier had full wet weather gear trousers , shoe covers and proper coat ( I forgot my shake dry 😞) also my super light mint bell pulsar 1000 for night times.

Tail fin aero pack had the packing cubes. Big one had my nighttime clothes , 2 pairs merino socks, 2 pairs Merino pants , ice breaker merino t shirt and Patagonia merino long sleeve. Merino drys really quickly. light weight Salomon trousers. Saloman techphibian shoes. Second cube had my second set cycling gear. So had 2x cycling shorts ( one on one off) ditto tops, arm warmers , vest , short and long fingered gloves. Third cube had meds and toiletries. Liz carried the chargers.

Tail fin top tube bag had quick access stuff. Mini electric pump , lip balm , tube , tyre lever , dyna plugs and some food.

Under bar bag had my other pair of glasses , and some more random spares including sram spare battery. one of the most useful items we had was a simple cloth which I kept with the lube for cleaning chains and bike.

Bike was fitted with a lupine light which doubles as a power bank , thus was incase we ever ended up cycling in the dark. Garmin 1050 with battery pack available in place of light. I also found ver useful the quad lock mount on the stem for my phone. Good for last minute directions to accommodation. garmin variable lights also only used on road.

Park tools pump also fitted on frame

Small fork packs had togs and microfibres towels for each of us. Good swimming places were hard to find in reality. And sand gets everywhere.

2x bike bottles. ( can be hard to fit two with frame bag. )

I would say a non carbon fibre bike is a good idea , bikes can get dropped a lot and I’m not sure how well CF would stand up. Also external cabling is easier to pack. 700c wheels probably more advisable re availability of spares.

Is your trip an event or a holiday? They need different approaches. if it’s an event your route is dictated , if you are camping a whole new world of packing opens up I imagine and I’m not going there . If it’s a holiday the joy is even with a vague outline of what you want to do you can alter on a daily basis to allow for weather etc.

Chargers are important. Liz carried all of those.

Tea bags if u that way inclined.

A few washing machine tabs would have been useful. None of the apartments had any. The hotel did do laundry but it was DEAR.

Cooking in was hard to do in that getting the right quantities and store cupboard items was tricky without buying too much. Mainly pasta dishes.

Stay away from lightly cooked eggs … you have been warned.

Factor 50 obviously. Lots of it.

It’s the journey not the destination.

Some random thoughts about a 13 day bikepacking ( non camping) trip and equipment etc . 4.Gear :the heavier your bike is the harder it is and the more windage you will have.
