Kenny and Cormac returned today even if they did start at eight , they always were a bit premature. Didi returned also with a plan to “just stay for an hour” more about that later . Peter , PS and herself made up the bunch along with yours truly. Teresa also showed up but after her recent defection to the Newry Wheelers there was some backchannel chat about whether this could be allowed to continue. Although it has to be said that PS does swing both ways ( between NTSR and 6.1 that is)
The weather was less than pleasant and the thought of open mountain occured only for as long as it would take to count the words in Mr Trump’s vocabulary . A summer seat expedition was put to the board and ratified in moments .
The seats were
1. Mr Dunbars seat at the Burma end .
4. Below Cloughmore stone where Didi died and was resurrected for the first time .
5. Rocky Road Corner where Didi died and was resurrected for the second time .
6. Half way round the Glen
( Ballynagelty should have been the next one but no one could face it )
Here Didi was prevailed upon to persist and with an infusion of fake Jelly Babies found a second wind .
7.Teresa’s seat which was more than just a little bit below the trails on the Red Bull loop .
8.White Mountain on the Black trail
9.Red Bog via the trenches .
Home straight James and don’t spare the horses from here , all completely soaked and COC with a buckled wheel courtesy of a broken spoke , Cormac suggested it was time for my pre- christmas diet as broken spokes are a speciality of mine.
With some of the usual suspects still proving reclusive , an old friend joined us after a sojourn down under .Chris Burns who was a regular many years ago is back , but struggled to keep air in his tyres today along with both Brian and Eamon . Peter who had Mr M tweaking his gears at the start later developed a non- functioning rear freehub ,so that was the end of his day .
Robbie and I had been commenting on how it would be a nice calm spin with no pressure when Eamon and Rowan descended late ( at about 100 mph) , so that was the end of that . They went up Castle bog like a couple of scalded cats , leaving the rest of us including our latest quinquagenarian gasping for breath .
Reminder that Santa Run is on Sat 15th December ( santa was busy on the 22nd ) , hopefully our German department will have returned and the camper is away for the season . Good luck to our Scottish rep who is having new suspension fitted soon , looking forward to his return to full speed .
Today was the big reveal of the new kit , Cormac couldn’t come as his jersey wouldn’t cover even his arm , I did think a medium was risky for him . Kenny had been warned but insisted there was no way he could be seen in a XL never mind an XXL . Emma might need a sharp knife to get his jersey off , hope she is careful. John Murray refused to come as we had not incorporated any tartan in the new design .
Robbie decided that NTSR might stand for Not The Slim Riders , which is close to the truth whereas Kenny thought NTRS might be better ..Not The Right Size.
In any event most folk seem happy so big shout out to Martin McGinn ( and Julie who did most of it ) and Maria at Spin 11.
Dan , Eamon , Scullion (our new Sponsor) , Peter , COC ,Doc, Liz and PS made up todays posse . Headed up Sallys to post and then to much trepidation from Robbie we headed into the mist towards Knockshee , dropping down to bath and back towards Fallow in very poor visibility . We took care to check that Robbie was ok along the way . Scullion had a spectacular dismount in the mud and unfortunately the camera took a while to get out , the new jersey got a fair testing . Dropped down to fallow corner then back up to Tunnel and mast , with a surprising number of clear rounds . Drooped down to style and then on to Badgers claw for an early finish .
Failed miserably to achieve a ” Power ” spin with only 800m climbed .
Further to Tuesdays appearance “T” arrived on her new bike which required more faffing. It looked like the pit lane at Brands Hatch as The Doc , Mr Power and Paul M attached various bits of plastic mudguards . These of course to stop the new bike getting dirty . Cormac had to lie down on the ground every time there was a puddle or any dirt so she could keep the bike clean , and when the mountain got just too muddy, T, Didi and Paul M headed off in search of some nice clean grass . Herself returned today but only in gravel mode and managed to subtract Mr Scullion from the group.
Todays route was definitely a 2 banana spin especially if like MR P and Doc you started at 8 and did 400m before 9. Route stated at Glen , Fiddlers , view point , stone , mast , low fallow corner , nurses cottage , road to glenloughan after a short delay to rewire Shanes Di2 . Finlieve lane and back into Fallow and home . My Garmin ran out of battery so no route till someone send me a GPX .
Good route from Finlieve down to Fallow bar the last 2-300 m which could do with a bit of exploring.
